Window Nativity Silhouette

I am so excited to show you this week's project!  With Christmas speeding toward us and company coming to visit, it may be the last Christmas project I get to do this year.  But it’s extra special to me, because it’s a Nativity scene.  I have started a small collection of Nativity scenes over the years.  I usually get at least one new one every year, even if it’s just an ornament.

But…on to my project…

I don’t really have a tutorial on this, because it’s pretty basic and because I was so excited to get it put up that I forgot to take pictures along the way!

Window Nativity Silhouette

This is in a bay window in my home.

Materials you will need:

  • White bulletin board paper
  • black poster board
  • X-acto knife with extra blades
  • sample of nativity scene for reference
  • chalk

This project came to mind the other day as I remembered all the cool silhouettes that people had done at Halloween for their windows.  However, this Nativity scene means so much more to me than any flurry of bats or jack-o-lanterns ever could.  It reminds me of the very reason that we celebrate Christmas in the first place- the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  I love the Christmas trees, the wreaths, the snowmen, the reindeer and Santa, but THE reason I celebrate Christmas is to remember the birth of Christ.

For my silhouette, I just measured my window (I wish it did not have those grid thingies in it).  I purchased the white bulletin board paper from a teachers’ supply store to fit the window.  I got 4 sheets of thick black poster board and taped them together on the back.  I took this image from my Silhouette downloads and printed it out on paper so I’d have a reference for my drawing.

image

It would be a dream come true if the Silhouette would cut something this big!  But alas I am happy with all the cool stuff it does cut :)

Hubby and I tag teamed and drew this image free hand onto the large poster board with a pencil.  We left out the star from the image above, because I thought it would be a pain to cut with an X-acto knife.  So, I found another image in the Silhouette store with a different star and downloaded it.

image

Then I used my slice tool and detached the star and enlarged it in the Silhouette software and cut  this simple star on black cardstock.

image

After we were satisfied with the pencil drawing, I went over it with white crayon, so that I could see really well to make my cut outs.  I should have used chalk, because I then had to go over some white crayon marks with a black paint pen when it was over.  If you use chalk, it will wipe right off, duh!

Then I took a really large TV box that we keep in the attic and I used it as my “cutting table”.  I laid out my poster board and went to work cutting out the silhouette of the Nativity.  It was relatively easy, except for the parts where the poster board was doubled.  I only broke one blade, but dulled 2 completely :)  Thankfully, I had won a fabulous box of Elmer’s craft supplies from Lil Luna a couple of weeks ago, so I had a few X-acto knives on hand.

After I cut it all out, we mounted it to the window with thick sticky dots.  We then taped the white paper up behind it.  We took a desk lamp with a moveable “head” and pointed it to the window; turned out the lights; and ran outside to see how it turned out.  I just love it!

I don’t have any lawn decorations and/or other outside décor except for my front porch.  But this makes such a statement at night when it’s lit up for all to see.

One more peek from a little further away.

$1 Laundry room shelf

I’m thinking about changing the name of my blog to “Everything’s $1”.  Not really, but the last few projects I’ve posted about have been ultra-thrifty!  This little shelf is no exception.  I bought it from a yard sale for $1.00.  Everyone loves a good before and after, so here you go.

Nov 12 2011 002
Before: your basic 1980’s kitchen shelf complete with a weird picture of a nest, some onions, books, a salt shaker, a pomegranate and some butterflies.  I’m pretty sure all the bases were covered with this one!

Nov 12 2011 029

After:  A little shelf with some personality.  At least now it has only one personality and isn’t trying to be so many things like it was in the 80’s : )

You really don’t need a tutorial for this one, but I’m gonna give you a brief one anyway.

First I scraped off the 1980’s mixed up decal.  It left the surface quite gummy, so I knew I didn’t want to paint over that.  I spray painted the shelf Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze.  Then I brushed on some white latex paint over it.  I let it dry overnight and then took my sandpaper to the edges to rough it up a bit.

Nov 12 2011 016

I mod podged some cute blue scrapbook paper that looks like water droplets onto my already gummy surface inside the “frame”.

I then cut out some stencils on cardstock using my Silhouette.  I used the letter cutouts to place my wording, and I used red craft paint to stencil the words, “It all comes out in the Wash” onto my frame.  I learned the hard way on this project that mod podge is slick and the paint from your stencil will run if you are not super careful- trust me, I tell you.

Nov 12 2011 018

I then took 2 metal buckets that I bought from Michael’s and slapped a Silhouette vinyl label on each of them.  One is for coins found in the washer or dryer and the other is for the miscellaneous odds and ends that I always seem to find in our laundry.  You wouldn’t believe the legos, pens, pencils, erasers, toys, and other “important” items that my kids leave in their pockets.  Now, instead of them sitting on top of the washer or dryer in piles, they can be placed in the buckets.  If they are not claimed in a reasonable amount of time, they become the property of mom : )

Nov 12 2011 028

So, this was a simple project that anyone could do to tidy up their laundry area or another problem area of the house.  All you need is a $1 shelf.  If you can’t find one, just ask me, I think I may have a few more squirreled away…

Happy organizing!

Halloween front porch

I know I’m very late on decorating my front porch for Halloween, but better late than never right?  As soon as I got these metal urns back in the summer at a yard sale, I’ve been thinking of pumpkin topiaries.  I got some faux pumpkins at Michael’s last year after Halloween for around $2 each.  I scored!  Now they are at least $12 at “50” off!  I’ll wait until after the holidays to grab some more this year in the $2 range; thank you very much!

So, I searched Pinterest and several websites to find out the best method for securing the pumpkins for a topiary.  Most said use wooden dowel.  I used one and poked holes through my pumpkins to attach them.  Since I am such a frugal gal, I didn’t want to poke a very obvious hole in the side or top of the pumpkins.  I made a hole just beside the stems.  This works as far as being able to use my pumpkins again, but the result is that my topiaries are a little lop-sided!  Oh. well…. no big deal…

We like “kooky not spooky” around here, so I came up with a simple way to dress up my topiaries and make them unique without being scary.

I just used black vinyl and my BFF, my Silhouette.  I cut out a black cat shape and had him facing one of the columns on my front porch.  Then I cut out a bunch of little black mice who seem to be scurrying around the column and away from the cat.  On the other side of the porch, I used black vinyl again to cut out a spider web.  Then a whole host of spiders are making their way from the web up my front columns.

We don’t do cats at our house; my hubby is allergic.  We don’t do mice – yuck!  We try not to do spider webs : ), and  spiders are definitely not welcome.  So, all of these creepy crawlies can stay outside on the front porch (at least for 9 more days).

Happy last minute decorating.

Painted Puppy Rug

I have seen painted rugs all over blogland, and all summer long I've been planning to paint one myself.  I wanted a cool Chevron or Quatrefoyle pattered rug.  But, it's been said that necessity is the mother of invention.  So, without further adieu, I give you the Before:

We have this little rug outside our doggie gate, to keep from tracking mud inside after we have take Buttercup and Charlie Brown out to do their business.  But, they had gotten a hold of the little rug and puppified it!  Oh, you'd like to see who Buttercup and Charlie Brown are?

My 2 Angels with their 2 little angels.  Buttercup on the left and Charlie Brown on the right.

I couldn't find one of those cool rugs like the ones from Ikea that the other crafters were using.  I went to Big Lots though, and scored this one for $3!  I figured, if it didn't work out, I hadn't spent a whole lot on my little project.

This project was really simple.  I used my Silhouette and made some stencils.  I chose craft paint and mixed it with fabric medium, so that it wouldn't harden and crack with use.  Then I placed my stencils, and I got to work with my trusty stencil brush.  After I was done, I sewed on a little pink bow for Buttercup and a little blue bow-tie for Charlie Brown.

And this is the finished product.  I love it!  It brings just a bit of personality into an otherwise boring little hallway.

Honestly! What some people will do for their dogs!  :)

Pinkalicious Birthday Party

pinkalicious book cover
(Warning- Tons of cute pink pictures in this post)

If you have a little a girl whose favorite color is pink, then a Pinkalicious party is a no-brainer!  We celebrated Ashby’s 6th Birthday 2 weeks ago and went totally PINK!  I can’t believe my little girl is 6 already!  I wanted to make this party really special- one she’d remember for a long time.  I was brainstorming and searching the web for Pinkalicious party ideas since her Ice Cream Sundae party last year!  I even went to Hobby Lobby after Christmas when they had their crazy 85% off sale and scored two pink mini Christmas trees to use for the party!

Invitations:

I made the invitations from clipart I found online. And the wording is similar to the invite used at seven thirty three's blog.

The birthday balloon wreath I made last year.  I just changed out the hanging sign in the middle.

I invited 8 little girls and their mommies to celebrate and wear their most Pinkalicious outfit.  They were also encouraged to bring swimsuits.  After the party filled with sweet treats, we had a Pink Parade of golf carts as we rode to my neighbors’ pool.

I tried to limit the party colors to pink, bright pink, white, and lime green.  With linens and dishes borrowed from my mother in-law, mom, friends, and neighbors, I set to work on a Pinktacular  party…

First I moved the pink gingham curtains from Ashby’s bedroom into the dining room to serve as a backdrop for the food table.  I made a cute pink and green bunting garland from scrapbook paper.  I used my Silhouette cutter to personalize and embellish it.

I had a pink table for the sweet treats.  All sugar baby!  We had such a fun time choosing pink candy for the party.  There were pink malt balls, pink jelly beans, pink taffy, pink gummy rings, pink lollipops, pink marshmallows dipped in chocolate and sprinkles, pink M&M’s, pink cupcakes, and pink chocolate covered strawberries dipped in pink sugar sprinkles.  The cake was a wonderful giant cupcake with pink icing piped around it with a cherry on top made with love by my mother in law.

In keeping with the Pinkalicious story, and to balance out all those sweets, we had a green food table.  We served chips with red and green salsa, green cucumber sandwiches, spinach dip and crackers, turkey roll ups made with spinach flavored tortilla wraps, pickles, green grapes, and green apples.

To wash it all down, we served Pink Lemonade, Pink Ginger Ale, and Pink St. Croix, along with the obligatory Coke.  Can’t do without the coke :)

I saw these little napkin dresses here, and I knew I had to make them!
Ashby said "thanks mom for the vests".  Ha!  And most of the girls
unfolded theirs right away,so they looked like snowflakes.
But...one little girl said "can I please take this home and save
it?"  And THAT made it all worth it!
